I tell people to talk to a long time Alaskan for tips on what to see “off the highways.” Stay away from tour companies…see Alaska as Alaskans see it. Drive the Parks and Richardson Highways. Take the ferry from Valdez to Portage Glacier. Go to “Chicken” and Eagle. Go to Homer. Do a day charter for Halibut in HOmer. Do a day charter for Red Salmon and raft the Kenai River. Drive up to the Yukon River. Drive to Manley Hots Springs. Chena Hot Springs. Visit Denali National Park…take the bus into the Park. Hike up Flat Top in Anchorage. Walk the Tony Knowles Bike Path around Anchorage. Rent a car. Self tour.

The folks I know all drove or sailed to Alaska. So, axiomatically, they didn’t “only go to Anchorage or Fairbanks.” I couldn’t tell you a thing about the Santa Claus If You Don’t Like New England Patriots Merry Kissmyass Ornament But I will love this proclivities of those who take commercial flights to Alaska. For the MOST PART, you can’t just come to Fairbanks and expect to get a good job (and you HAVE to have a job that pays well!). There are typically very few on the table and always others seeking employment.
