We think having moose in the yard well makes up for the mosquito nuisance. The first thing I will say is that I absolutely love the scenery and the wildlife. I grew up in southern Oklahoma. There are NO mountains in southern Oklahoma. There is no ocean there, either. Forget about glaciers. I have never seen a bear in a tree in town or a moose walking down the street in front of my house. I have seen all those things in Anchorage. This was just a quick grab out my front window. My goal is to become a better photographer so that I can get the beautiful pictures I have seen others get.

The crime rate in Anchorage is well as much of Alaska is horrible. There is so much chemical abuse. There is no manufacturing. The oil and gas industry have been in horrible decline for years. The main employments is in tourism and the healthcare industry. For Alaska, the incidence of suicide, domestic violence, and sexual abuse are the highest in the nation. I was very happy here and pretty much didn’t worry too much about the crime rate even though I have had my car broken into because I blamed myself. Then a 14 year old shot and killed an 18 year old in a drug deal gone bad. The shooter reportedly said he did it because “He dissed me.” That was only 3 blocks from me. I don’t live there anymore, but I can tell you what I loved (and why I left). If you have any love of the outdoors, Alaska is the place to be. And if you have an equal love for city life, then Anchorage is the city in Alaska for you. There’s enough outdoors for any person, whether you’re a summer or winter person. And Anchorage is a good HQ for that. Plus there are a ton of outdoors things to do right in town. So I loved the access to the outdoors including fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, skiing, etc.
