Top I Stand With Aldean – Try That In A Small Town T-shirt
Yes, although not in the I Stand With Aldean – Try That In A Small Town T-shirt and I love this same way that we do today. Gyms at that period didn’t have all the fancy weightlifting equipment that we have. It was good old fashioned free weights, which of course aren’t as safe, and other things like “medicine balls” that they would throw around. (These were fairly large, heavy leather balls, much bigger than a basketball. It was meant to develop the chest and coordination.) Far, far more men than women went. The idea of a woman being physically strong was very unusual and people thought that no man would want to marry a strong woman — they used to be called “the weaker sex” and it was considered their role. However schools did have physical education for both sexes, though the girls were not expected to do as much. All-girls private schools also had girls’ sports. And women did play tennis, croquet, and badminton in a ladylike manner. My grandmother was born in 1898 and was fond of table tennis.
For men, physical exercise of various kinds was considered healthy. But there wasn’t the I Stand With Aldean – Try That In A Small Town T-shirt and I love this emphasis on bodybuilding or even necessarily reaching certain weightlifting goals. It was a more general thing. Too much bulk would make you look like a farm laborer rather than a gentleman, and you wouldn’t want that. And obviously going to the gym was purely a middle and upper class pursuit. Working-class people didn’t have the time or the money. Fashion moves to accommodate the whims, trends and vagaries of whichever culture it is rooted in at the time. At different times in history cloaks, ruffles, flounces, ribbons and all sorts of vainglorious foppery have appeared and disappeared (and that is just for men. Woman’s fashions have varied even more so).
