Have you wiped your shoes?” I was shocked. she was literally there, right next to me as I wiped my shoes. she watched me do it. I answered, “Excuse me?” “It’s just that you don’t seem like someone who would go here, and I’m sure you don’t know the rules within this store.” I was so humiliated as some of the people looked at us, and my mother was nowhere to be found. she maybe was in the farthest corner of the one-hectare store. I ended up just going to the fountain outside the store, texting my mother I was experiencing a stomach problem but that I was okay. of course, after not speaking or meeting for years, I tried making conversation. it sure was awkward… “The rug by the store was SO BIG, I’m almost sure it was as big as our living room (in our house we lived in years ago)!” I said, jokingly. my mother replied, “I know, but the staff, especially the ones placed in the front sure made me feel welcomed! Maybe the mat was placed to make you feel like home?”

I felt so ugly and vulnerable. ever since that day, I started changing myself little by little. I started wearing lip tint, then I slowly started to upgrade my wardrobe. as much as I’ve gained SO MUCH confidence, that day at that store still brings me back all my insecurities. no matter how you look, as long as you’re not hurting anyone (or breaking the law, of course!) no one should shame you! wow! this blew up. thank you for all the kind comments! I’m sorry I couldn’t reply to them, as I’m really, really shy. hahaha. and to all those who shared their story, I hope you guys don’t ever have to suffer the same event again. let’s show them that we’re great, with or without changing ourselves. because we are, and we don’t need to prove to anyone that we should be worth their time. it’s their loss if they don’t realize it. I certainly didn’t look wealthy. On a budget holiday, I was visiting Brisbane and wandering around looking at beautiful things when I came across a Tiffany’s store. Growing up in the 1950s and being a big fan of Audrey Hepburn, I couldn’t resist having a peek at their stunning merchandise. I had my hands firmly clasped behind me when an elegant senior lady with snowy white hair approached me. I quickly explained that I was only looking and was totally unable to purchase anything much as I wished it was possible. Telling her that I was a fan of Audrey Hepburn and the iconic movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, I then told her this was the first Tiffany’s store I’d seen and how I admired the many beautiful items on display. Graciously, the woman invited me to continue my browsing and asked me to wait for a moment. She disappeared through a security door returning a few minutes later with two good-sized Tiffany bags, both with weighty contents which she handed to me. Taking the contents out one at a time, I discovered a book on the history of Tiffany’s in one, and the year’s catalogue in the other. To my amazement, this twinkle-eyed lady informed me that the books were her gift to me. She then recommended I recommence my shopping expedition with the comment that she was sure I’d receive excellent service wherever I went!
