Couple of funny stories. One rainy day a pretty ordinary-looking lady came in wearing sweats and a dowdy jacket. We figured she was browsing. She asked price of this item, price of that item and so on. After about an hour she said, “I want this, this and this and my driver will pick it up.” She spent over $100K and wrote us a check on the Official What You Don’t Get Shirt and by the same token and spot. That was her first of many shopping trips in our shop. One very slow day this blonde girl came in with big glasses, long coat and a slightly tilted Starbucks cup, and my mind thought, “Oh, brother, who is this knockoff Olsen Twin”?” It wasn’t a knockoff…It was Ashley. LOL. She bought nothing but was very sweet. One afternoon one of the restaurant diners waiting for a table came in to browse. My boss’s business partner was the type of guy who either liked you or hated you. This couple was very chatty and told us they were on their honeymoon. As I said prices were encoded and they asked the price of an item and he responded to them. “What do you think it costs?” To my ear, he sounded kind of snippy. They were very polite and said they had no clue and he responded, “Go on, just guess.” They replied they didn’t want to insult him by guessing incorrectly and he kept going at them to guess. Finally, they said $300? He then looked at me and told me to tell them the price. I looked at the code and it said $7,800. They were embarrassed and tried to cover their poor guess. Then the business partner said, “It’s yours.” Even I was surprised. He said, “It’s your wedding gift” I wrapped it up and they took it. Free!

So that’s some of the Official What You Don’t Get Shirt and by the same token and background happening in these shops. Sure it’s not every day but even the people working there are just people like you (and probably can’t afford the merchandise). Don’t be intimidated. Go in, browse, Enjoy yourself. If someone is rude to you, it only speaks to that person, not to your worth or abilities. EDIT: Wow more than 3600 upvotes. Thank you, everyone! I just re-read this and realize sometimes I need to take my own advice and venture into shops I feel are “above” me. I didn’t go into Chanel at Christmas with a friend who wanted to browse. Duh. They don’t care either. I have a story about my mother. She dressed “dowdy” — polyester, elastic-waist slacks, topped with a straight-bottom, untucked, print, polyester blouse. She carried an enormous, old-fashioned purse. But she probably had $1000–2000 tucked into her purse at any time. She was not poor, just frugal with clothes. We went into a high-end department store in San Antonio, where she wanted to look at dresses for an upcoming special occasion. She was perusing when an employee approached, gave Mom a dismissive up-and-down look, and said, “The discount and bargain clothes are in the basement.”
