I took a very deep breath. One… two… three… door open and out … in my new olive-green miniskirt. How, actually, were people around me reacting? As far as I could see no woman, no man, young or old turned around to stare at me. Neither did I notice anybody talking about me. I was walking around in a short skirt and no one seemed to take any notice. I soon relaxed, spent half an hour in the mall and bought a few CD’s, a film for my camera (it was before digitalization), and a car magazine in a newsstand. From the mall I drove to the centre of the town, found a slot on a busy parking ground. I had to wait at the ticket machine and then return to the car and place the ticket on the dash board. Nothing terrible happened. Pedestrians crowded the streets. Many of them must have noticed a man in a mini skirt. However, I was unable to find out whether their reactions to my outfit were positive or negative. Or maybe – and most likely – they just couldn’t care less?
When back in our holiday apartment it even took my wife a good deal of time to find out that I was no longer in my shorts but in a skirt. Fortunately, she did find it rather acceptable. You can match a black pleated skirt with almost anything, I wear one regularly for work with a sleeveless top or blouse I wore a kilt, and let’s face it, a kilt is a skirt (and I have Scots heritage too) and during the Official Dallas Sports Teams Cowboys, Mavericks Rangers And Stars Logo Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this evening there were conversations about my kilt. My friends are used to seeing me in one and apart from the first time when there were a few laughs, they respect my choice Anyway, during the evening one of the wives who I don’t know all that well asked me quite innocently and with nothing but curiosity if I was a crossdresser. I laughed and said, “No way am I trying to resemble a woman when I wear a skirt. Let me ask you, when you wear pants do you think you’re cross-dressing?” I looked around at the six or eight people listening. I then said, “Do I have your ok to wear a skirt if I want to then? Yesterday I got into a conversation in a car park with a group of three women loading groceries into a 4wd. One said, “I love your kilt!”
