Utilities are high and heating bills are the worst. There are good paying jobs around for professionals and those with specialized skills or a good connection. For basic and entry level jobs the pay is not great.

That being said, there are folks who manage to live fairly cheaply in Fairbanks. As of now there is no state income tax in Alaska (though this may change soon), nor sales tax in Fairbanks (except on alcohol sales). Not my thing, but “dry” cabins can be rented for as little as $500/month. Heating with wood can be economical, especially if you like to cut and split you own. Some folks hunt and fish. Anchorage: More job opportunities, more stuff to do, as in restaurants, theaters, clubs, etc, more of a “city” feel to it.
