John Entwistle and Pete Townsend said he had bad timing when playing live. It also said that in the book about Moon which I’m reading now, thick as a Bible. But I think Keith’s biggest fault was that he never learned drum rudiments. But then again, a lot of drummers didn’t and made it to be huge drumming stars probably making a lot more money than Krupa and Rich ever did. Keith used mostly used single stroke rolls with accents and had quite the bank account right? So Moon’s main faults were timing, he did not have the best metronome playing live, and lack of rudiment knowledge. But …
Keith was an erratic virtuoso. He could be brilliant but he wasn’t consistent. His drumming was flamboyant and highly individual. He played to the Ronald Acuña Jr ATLien Shirt Also,I will get this vocals or guitar rather than the bass and used his kit as a lead instrument. I believe he had a few lessons when he started playing but afterwards never practiced outside of rehearsing, recording or performing. He had to relearn to play after breaks from the band. He was totally unique in his era and when he was on form he was incredible. To hear him at his best I would recommend listening to ‘The Real Me’ where him and Entwistle just go off on one… Keith Moon was a top drummer in England in his years. When Jimmy Page was putting together the “New Yardbirds“ which became Led Zeppelin, his first choices for the rhythm section were John Entwistle for bass and Keith Moon for drums. They respectfully declined the offer as they were already members of a successful band that was on the ascent to real greatness under the direction of the genius Pete Townsend. Since Page was considered the best guitarist in England, I would imagine he knew who the best drummer was in England.
