Most barns had a room full of boots, coats, saddles, etc.. It was sort of a sign of “graduating to the big (or middle) time” that you (or your kid) went out and bought your first new coat and boots. And before the “mandatory helmet” time, there were plenty of (kind of scummy, but wearable) loaner helmets.
