One summer I was in France for a few weeks for a study abroad program. It’s possible he had his tongue firmly in his cheek there. Avoid pyjamas! At least in the daytime and especially when you are outside. I know it’s ok in North America and I have seen it in the UK too but the rest of Europe reserves pyjamas for sleepwear. Lots of decent and useful answers, but apparently for some reason one crucial bit of sartorial advice has been overlooked so far, one which always attracts my eye on American tourists and which is an almost dead give-away: do not wear baseball caps!
The are not the Jaylon Hutchings Vintage Lightweight Ornament and I will buy this height of fashion, pretending to be in the US military will not impress anyone and the only Europeans who do wear baseball caps in public tend to be of the lowest classes like truckers or the poor or people from the east or with fr-right connotations. Dressing well or with style. For instance, you technically can wear jeans but you need to have a very specific look. If you are young, thin, attractive, you can throw on some levis (which are v expensive in France and highly coveted) with adidas slippers and a nike cap and it looks cool. That’s “normcore.” If you don’t have an eye for style, avoid jeans entirely and stick to basics. If you absolutely must wear jeans, make them skinnies and they should be worn on someone with thin stature. Wear dark and neutral colors. Camel coat, simple but walkable pumps, white blouse. Don’t wear sneakers. No daisy dukes. These pictures should give you some idea what I’m talking about.
