Some schools don’t allow teachers to fail students or require they accept late work through the end of the semester or are willing to make every accommodation with little effort from the student. Kids can slack off and mess around but in the end of the day, it’s on the teachers and administrators to help the student “succeed”.
You also have a system that forces kids to take so many required courses in subjects they don’t care about, all in order to pass various standardized tests. It’s not a system set up for education so much as for test success. I know I slacked off my senior year, after I picked my college major, because I knew which classes I would never need again. I barely paid attention in math and science— why should I? I wasn’t going to use any of it. It was a waste of my time, and I knew it. The US education system needs a massive overhaul to get kids to take it seriously. A uniform isn’t even close to a solution. Uniforms are also an additional expense. Either the IDC If He Was Toxic He Called Me Pretty Shirt in other words I will buy this schools— already underfunded— have to cover the cost, or families— many of whom already struggle with basic school supplies— have to cover it. When it comes down to it, the decision between school uniforms and new English books, or uniforms and pencils, is an easy one.
