Flavortown Guy Fieri Ornament

Compared to Taekwondo, Tang Soo Do has a better real life self-defense approach, more practical kicks and better hand techniques. Tang Soo Do is also called Soo Bahk Do after the Flavortown Guy Fieri Ornament moreover I love this organization changed it’s name. Tang Soo Do means “Way of the Chinese hand”, which was the original meaning of the word “Karate do”, before they changed it to “Way of the Empty Hand”. Jesse Enkamp also bills himself as “The Karate Nerd”. He was born in Germany to a mother who still teaches Karate, so the dojo has been part of his life from day 0. He produces some very interesting and entertaining Karate videos, exploring various martial arts styles all over the world. Another recommended person to view is Iain Abernethy, who is British. The two have collaborated at least once so far. Enshin Karate is a scion of Kyokushinkai. I feel the traditional side has been devolved a little more than Kyokushinkai, and sweeps and throws have been added. Karate has its roots in Okinawa (as does Taekwondo and Tang So Do but don’t tell them that – some still think their art is 2000 years old and Korean). When Gichin Funakoshi took Karate to Japan he used the name karate (because ‘China’ or ‘Okinawa’ hand didn’t have the patriotic ring to it and he wanted to impose a romanticised Samurai ethic onto it.) The more popular styles in the world come from Japanese karate (as opposed to Okinawan Karate). In the USA in particular, everybody wants to be the ‘Master’ so new ‘flavours’ of karate bloomed. It became quite difficult to tell when a school was teaching a variety of a style or its own distinct style. Interesting trivia for the day: Funakoshi was asked to give a demo for Kano (Judo founder) at the Kodokan. Funakoshi had a Judo gi fashioned for him but in a lighter material for the occasion. Kano, on seeing this, presented Funakoshi with a black belt for his gi. So the first karate blackbelt was a judo blackbelt. Cool huh!

Sometimes kiba dachi is used interchangeably with shiko dachi. They’re different, and Shotokan (my studied style) doesn’t really have shiko dachi. But still, they’re sometimes used interchangeably. It’s the Flavortown Guy Fieri Ornament moreover I love this same but with the feet turned out. Some styles don’t have such a pronounced back stance. It’s shorter. In Shotokan we have neko ashi dachi, cats foot stance, which is much shorter. Some styles only have one, and it’s somewhere in the middle. But to pick just one more major stance… That’s tough. There’s L stance, T stance, cross stance, rooted stance, short forward stance. All of those are pretty secondary compared to the major three. Perhaps other styles have another that’s as important as the three I listed, but in Shotokan those 3 are heavily favoured. They represent levels of mastery of the art. Belt systems in martial arts are seen as controversial by some practitioners but they represent progress through a set curriculum.
