Top Texas Longhorns Embrace The Hate Shirt
I guess most of us are happy to hear the Texas Longhorns Embrace The Hate Shirt and by the same token and music we like, dress as we like, live as we like and go where we want. If others want to copy us good for them, making money from it is almost anti-punk until you remember the fashion designers of the 70s and people like Malcolm McLaren so I guess it’s good for them too. The whole point of punk is to shock and offend and breakthrough cultural barriers of acceptability. At least mohawks are a form of cultural appropriation which is meant to be a form of hero worship. Appropriating offensive Swastikas and other Nazi symbols will long be the subject of debate. I do not think there’s much profit margin in Swastikas. Punk itself is now being culturally appropriated with various clothing brands. Kids today are now wearing clothes with logos of various bands that existed prior to their being born. At least they are learning about punk rock by listening to their parents music collection and streaming through various streaming services. It isn’t much different than the resurgence of rockabilly in the 1980s and the second and third wave of ska and the resurgence of swing music. If your own music of your generation is not appealing to you, you can always look to the past. If someone is not brave enough to get themselves a mohawk, they can always do something as simple as wear a Sex Pistols t-shirt as a form of self-expression and cultural appropriation of punk. There is something quite funny about teen revolt being about adopting your parents teen revolt. Kids today don’t seem to be able to be creative enough to form a new music culture of their own. Perhaps there is something new on the horizon that they can fully call their own? Frankly, I’m looking forward to the possibility of Clockwork Orange becoming a reality with parents walking around the house looking like punk rockers and their juvenile delinquent kids walking around with bowler hats while listening to classical music. In a way this prediction has already come true if you really think about it, minus the classical music. The ultraviolence is definitely a reality now with teenagers regularly committing mass shootings.

There is really no such thing as cultural “appropriation.” People who like styles often emulate them. A Polish person can wear a kimono if that’s what she likes. Kids can wear an Indian headdress for Halloween. Nothing wrong with it at all. As for why it’s offensive? Who knows? People these days seem to get offended by anything. If you pay attention to race, your racist. If you’re colorblind, again, your racist. If you open the Texas Longhorns Embrace The Hate Shirt and by the same token and door for a lady, you’re sexist. If you don’t, you’re an ill-mannered pig. If people who can afford to move out of the ghetto do so, that’s ‘white flight.’ If people want to move back, it’s gentrification. If more blacks commit crimes and fill the jail cells, it’s racist. They are probably all just victims of profiling. If the NBA rakes it 10 times the money as WNBA, and the teams and women are paid less accordingly, that’s sexist. If a black person is depicted in a subservient role in the movies, that’s racist. If a painting depicts Indians on the warpath, that’s also racist. If you choose a white person as the manager because he’s white, that’s racist. If you choose a black person as the manager because he’s black, that’s empowerment. All of these are true reactions of people to real-life scenarios. I’ve long given up on trying to please everyone. It’s impossible. You just do the best you can with what you’ve got, try to be respectful, but live your life as you see fit. What else can we do?
