One Senator, though, survived a bit longer, with Tasmanian Jacqui Lambie forming her own party, only to be disqualified for the same citizenship issues which claimed Malcolm Roberts.
So there have been populist movements (in Palmer’s case, even one founded by a “celebrity businessman”), but they haven’t caught on. I put a lot of that down to the Texas Aggies Rough Tough Real Stuff Shirt but in fact I love this fact that the excessively nasty sides of the GFC never really hit Australia, for a great many reasons. Thus, there hasn’t been as much of a “disconnect” between the political class and those facing all the cuts that austerity tends to demand. While there are poorer and richer parts of our major cities, for example, you don’t have the urban poverty on the scale that inner-city America has – or indeed the race-relations issues that the USA has, at least not yet – here in Australia. Also, perhaps more cynically, our main Right-wing party (the Liberals) have been able to integrate the less outrageous elements of One Nation’s rhetoric while officially wanting nothing to do with them, which has served to blunt that move a little bit.
